Assessment of movement patterns in Folsomia candida (Hexapoda: Collembola) in the presence of food

چکیده
24 25 We showed that Folsomia candida (a blind soil-dwelling Collembola) was able to shift from 26 non-directional (random or search strategy) to directional (target-oriented) movements at short 27 distance of food. We measured departure from linearity and access (or not) to food by the springtail 28 according to distance to the target position. Video-records and image analysis were used to obtain 29 numerical data at 0.2 sec interval. The probability of food capture within 10 min (maximum duration 30 of the experiment) was negatively related to distance. Two patterns can be observed along successful 31 trajectories in our experimental conditions (22°C, ambient light, still air), non-directional movement 32 being followed by directional movement when the animals approach food at 25 mm. 33 34

Brain organization in Collembola (springtails).
Arthropoda is comprised of four major taxa: Hexapoda, Crustacea, Myriapoda and Chelicerata. Although this classification is widely accepted, there is still some debate about the internal relationships of these groups. In particular, the phylogenetic position of Collembola remains enigmatic. Some molecular studies place Collembola into a close relationship to Protura and Diplura within the monop...
متن کاملCollembolan Transcriptomes Highlight Molecular Evolution of Hexapods and Provide Clues on the Adaptation to Terrestrial Life
BACKGROUND Collembola (springtails) represent a soil-living lineage of hexapods in between insects and crustaceans. Consequently, their genomes may hold key information on the early processes leading to evolution of Hexapoda from a crustacean ancestor. METHOD We assembled and annotated transcriptomes of the Collembola Folsomia candida and Orchesella cincta, and performed comparative analysis ...
متن کاملCompensatory growth of Phanerochaete velutina mycelial systems grazed by Folsomia candida (Collembola).
Phanerochaete velutina is a major agent of wood decomposition in temperate forests. It grows out of woody resources in search of other resources and is then vulnerable to grazing by invertebrates. The aim of this study was to determine how continuous grazing and grazing for only 2 days by different densities of collembola, Folsomia candida, affect mycelial development (radial extension, hyphal ...
متن کاملBiological identification of springtails (Hexapoda: Collembola) from the Canadian Arctic, using mitochondrial DNA barcodes
We evaluated sequence diversity in the mitochondrial cytochrome-c oxidase I (COI; EC 1.9.3.1) gene as a tool for resolving differences among species of Arctic springtails. The Collembola examined in this analysis were collected from Igloolik, Cornwallis, and Somerset islands and included representatives from all major families found in the Arctic. Members of 13 genera and 19 species were examin...
